Obsidian™-GF Glass Fiber Reinforced PA6 filament is designed to provide vibrant colour options in an engineering-grade material for your Markforged printer. This lower-cost alternative to Markforged Onyx™ is compatible with all Markforged printers. Developed after thorough analysis and testing on both our in-house Markforged printer and through multiple external beta testers, Obsidian™-GF ensures a seamless printing experience, delivering parts with an outstanding appearance and excellent mechanical properties. Made from premium chopped glass fiber and PA6 copolymer, Obsidian™-GF allows customers to choose brilliant colours, maintain excellent mechanical properties, and save money when using a Markforged printer.

Markforged Print Recommendations:

Obsidian™-GF is formulated to be a drop-in replacement for Onyx™ without requiring any changes to print settings.

Recommended Print Settings for Non-Markforged Printers:

  • Extruder Temperature: 265-285°C
  • Bed Temperature: 90-110°C
  • Nozzle: Hardened steel nozzle recommended.
  • Bed Preparation: Magigoo Bed Prep and 3DXTECH Polyimide Tape yield the best results.
  • Heated Chamber: Recommended for optimal performance.
  • Supports: AquaTek™ water soluble X1 USM Universal Support Material is ideal for complex models.
  • Drying Instructions: Dry at 90°C for 4 hours if the filament shows signs of moisture.

Abrasive Material Advisory

This filament is particularly abrasive compared to other 3D printing materials. Standard brass nozzles can wear out very quickly, leading to inconsistent nozzle diameters and extrusion issues.

Recommendation: Use hardened steel nozzles with this filament to maximize the toolhead’s lifespan and ensure the quality of your prints. Hardened steel nozzles are often inexpensive and can be easily installed according to your printer manufacturer’s instructions.

Nylon

Overview

Highly durable, flexible material.

Nylon has high impact and abrasion resistance; offering a high amount of tensile strength whilst also being a flexible material. It is one of the most heat-stable filaments, remaining unchanged in high temperature environments. 

It is hygroscopic, meaning that the filament will absorb moisture easily which will cause prints to warp and fail. This can be circumvented by keeping the filament in an air-tight, dry environment. Nylon can warp easily; depending on the printer and slicer used, some trial and error may be needed to prevent this. Printed items will degrade from UV radiation if left in sunlight for long periods of time.

Used for: Gears, Screws, and Cable ties.

Some manufacturers provide PA6 & PA12 Nylons, PA12 has increased moisture stability and is more resistant to moisture absorption. The same applies to Nylon 66 compared to Nylon 6.
