CarbonX PA12+CF is made using a specialty Nylon 12 [PA12] and high-modulus carbon fiber. This material offers an excellent combination of performance and printability. PA12 absorbs much less moisture than PA6-based materials and has superior retention of mechanical properties after exposure to humid environments.

CarbonX PA12 Carbon Fibre Reinforced Nylon 3D Filament

CarbonX Carbon Fiber PA12 is made using high-modulus carbon fiber and a specialty Nylon 12 (PA12) that we chose for its printability, thermal properties, and chemical resistance. PA12+CF is widely used in a variety of industries due to its excellent chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, and wide processing window. Our formulation ensures very low shrinkage in the printed part resulting in excellent dimensional stability, making our PA12+CF an excellent choice for tools, fixtures, and jigs.

CarbonX PA12 Carbon Fiber Reinforced Nylon Filament is a semi-aromatic polyamide copolymer reinforced with high-modulus carbon fiber.  This filament is ideal for anyone that desires a structural component with high modulus, improved chemical and thermal resistance, excellent surface quality, and ease of printing.  Tired of nylon that warps?  This is the answer you’ve been looking for.  Excellent dimensional stability comes from the carbon fiber and the semi-aromatic nylon.

Benefits of PA12+CF Includes:

  • High thermal properties, with a CUT of 120?C and HDT of 150°C
  • Excellent strength and stiffness over a wide temperature range, up to 150°C
  • Very low moisture absorption yielding improved retention of mechanical properties even when exposed to humid environments
  • Low density makes it ideal for light-weight parts
  • Superior chemical resistances, especially when compared to PA6 nylons
  • Low shrinkage and warping for high dimensional stability and reproducible part-to-part measurements

What Is It?

Fibers 5-10 micrometers wide made of carbon. The fibers are aligned following the axis of the material.

This, along with their physical makeup, are what give this material its excellent properties.

What Does It Do?

Carbon Fibers demonstrate a lot of desirable material properties:

  • High stiffness
  • High tensile strength
  • High heat tolerance
  • High chemical resistance
  • Low weight
  • Low thermal expansion

How Does It Work?

Reinforcing plastic with carbon fibers produces a 3D printing filament which exhibits the best properties of both the carbon fibers and the plastic of choice.

What Is It Good For?

Ideal for any applications which require light weight and rigidity.

Carbon fiber reinforced parts, designed to use less material and save weight, is extremely popular in aerospace, civil engineering, the military, and motorsports.

Recommended Print Settings:

  • Extruder: 265-285?C
  • Bed Temp: 90-110?C
  • Nozzle: We currently recommend a hardened steel nozzle with a minimum diameter of 0.4mm
  • Other: Ideal layer height is 60% of nozzle diameter. We do not recommend printing layers smaller than 0.2mm with carbon fiber reinforced filaments
  • Heated Chamber: Recommended
  • Drying Instructions: 90?C for 4 hours

New Data:  We updated the mechanical and thermal data on our carbon fiber grades.  You can see the new data HERE on our blog.

Please note:  Customers should test their parts to determine end-use suitability using this polymer.

Nylon

Overview

Highly durable, flexible material.

Nylon has high impact and abrasion resistance; offering a high amount of tensile strength whilst also being a flexible material. It is one of the most heat-stable filaments, remaining unchanged in high temperature environments.

It is hygroscopic, meaning that the filament will absorb moisture easily which will cause prints to warp and fail. This can be circumvented by keeping the filament in an air-tight, dry environment. Nylon can warp easily; depending on the printer and slicer used, some trial and error may be needed to prevent this. Printed items will degrade from UV radiation if left in sunlight for long periods of time.

Used for: Gears, Screws, and Cable ties.

Some manufacturers provide PA6 & PA12 Nylons, PA12 has increased moisture stability and is more resistant to moisture absorption. The same applies to Nylon 66 compared to Nylon 6.
