Description

Novamid ID 1030-CF10

Is an engineering grade filament, developed especially for use with FDM 3D Desktop printers .  Its the type of filament that you need for the “under the hood” jobs.  It is a pure polyamide 6/polyamide 66 with 10% carbon fibres rather than carbon powder.

The material prints warp free and has a superb smooth appearance.  A perfect filament for use in the automotive industries, due to its high heat deflection and excellent interlayer strength.

An enclosed chamber is preferred and a hardened steel nozzle is best for use with this filament. Plus a heated bed is preferred.  Keep the filament dried at all times when not printing and endeavour to store in a moisture free environment and use the reusable bag provided by 3D FilaPrint.

Optimized crystallization profile improves fusion, enabling parts with excellent interlayer strength and high surface quality.

Some of the possible uses for this filament are..

  • Under the hood automotive
  • Jigs and fittings
  • High performance parts
  • Fixtures requiring high tensile strength

Chemically the bonding can be optimized using the proper substrate material and/or an adhesive promotor (glue). Good results can be obtained using a polyetherimide (PEI) or (glass fiber reinforced) epoxy build surface eventually in combination with the mechanical bonding options.

Amongst the adhesive promotors, Dimafix has proven to give good results. In all cases it is important that the build surface cannot deform together with the print so it should be stiff enough should and mounted well to the underlying structure.

When the adhesion is good the print will exhibit low warpage and will give the good performance as targeted.

Novamid ID 1030 could generate less warpage stresses compared to other PAs, so bed adhesion might be easier to maintain during printing. Dimafix, PrintaFix, PEI sheet on glass are the options for this grade.

Heated print bed For the best results regarding adhesion and crystallization behavior of Novamid ID the build plate needs to be heated above 100C / 212F. Higher build plate temperature will result in better adhesion to the build substrate as well.

Closed and heated build chamber A heated build chamber reduces the warpage and helps the fusion of the layers during printing. In this way the force is reduced and is delamination from the build plate less likely.

Dry filament Polyamides are hygroscopic of nature which causes more problems during printing when it has absorbed high amounts of moisture. Novamid ID filaments are stored and packed under dry condition and when it arrives the filament is dry. To ensure the filament will be dry after use please store the filament back in the re-sealable bag with the silica gel pouches. In this way the filament can be used multiple times without having moisture issues. A preferred method is cutting the right amount of filament and store the rest of the spool back in the provided re-sealable bag. With this method, only the filament that is needed will be exposed to moisture. The best storage is in sealed plastic boxes that can be sealed with silica gel. This way ensures the filament to be dry for use.

The material can also be dried in a desiccant dryer for 4 hours at 80C / 176F. Make sure the spool is not deforming due to the temperature. Alternatively, a heat convection oven at 80C / 176F can be used. In this case, allow for a longer drying time.  Silica pouches can also be dried via this method.
We have also been informed by several customers that storing your filament in a bag of rice is also a great way to keep moisture absorption to a minimum.

Nylon

Overview

Highly durable, flexible material.

Nylon has high impact and abrasion resistance; offering a high amount of tensile strength whilst also being a flexible material. It is one of the most heat-stable filaments, remaining unchanged in high temperature environments.

It is hygroscopic, meaning that the filament will absorb moisture easily which will cause prints to warp and fail. This can be circumvented by keeping the filament in an air-tight, dry environment. Nylon can warp easily; depending on the printer and slicer used, some trial and error may be needed to prevent this. Printed items will degrade from UV radiation if left in sunlight for long periods of time.

Used for: Gears, Screws, and Cable ties.

Some manufacturers provide PA6 & PA12 Nylons, PA12 has increased moisture stability and is more resistant to moisture absorption. The same applies to Nylon 66 compared to Nylon 6.
