Obsidian™ PA6+CF filament was formulated to be a lower-cost drop-in Markforged Onyx Alternative suitable for all Markforged printers. We developed this material after extensive analysis and testing on our own in-house Markforged printer and many outside beta testers. The result is a seamless printing experience that produces parts with an outstanding appearance and excellent mechanical properties. Made using premium high-modulus carbon fiber and PA6 copolymer, Obsidian™ is an excellent alternative to Onyx™ that allows our customers to save money when using your Markforged printer.

Don’t have a Markforged printer? That’s no problem – Obsidian™ is also compatible with all non-Markforged printers that are suitable for printing PA6+CF.  Take advantage of the excellent strength, stiffness, and appearance of this specialty material without over spending on Markforged Onyx™.

Markforged Print Recommendations:

  • Obsidian™ was formulated to be a drop-in for Onyx™ without any changes to the print settings.

Recommended Print Settings for Non-Markforged Printers:

    • Extruder: 265-285°C
    • Bed Temp: 90-110°C
    • Nozzle: We currently recommend a hardened steel nozzle
    • Heated Chamber: Recommended
    • Drying Instructions: 90°C for 4 hours if the filament exhibits signs of moisture

Nylon

Overview

Highly durable, flexible material.

Nylon has high impact and abrasion resistance; offering a high amount of tensile strength whilst also being a flexible material. It is one of the most heat-stable filaments, remaining unchanged in high temperature environments. 

It is hygroscopic, meaning that the filament will absorb moisture easily which will cause prints to warp and fail. This can be circumvented by keeping the filament in an air-tight, dry environment. Nylon can warp easily; depending on the printer and slicer used, some trial and error may be needed to prevent this. Printed items will degrade from UV radiation if left in sunlight for long periods of time.

Used for: Gears, Screws, and Cable ties.

Some manufacturers provide PA6 & PA12 Nylons, PA12 has increased moisture stability and is more resistant to moisture absorption. The same applies to Nylon 66 compared to Nylon 6.

    Martin Wiesner

    Obsidian works very well on my Markforged. It prints neatly and is more rigid than Onyx which is a huge bonus. Layer adhesion is excellent. I also tried it on non-Markforged machines and it printed well, albeit after some tuning. I manufacture end-use parts for the automotive industry and find Obsidian ideal for low volume production, especially on Markforged machines.
