What is Re-Worked filament, you might ask? In the production of filament, there’s often some oddly-sized or unusable filament created. Instead of letting it go to waste, they, at 3DQF, collect this leftover material and put it through their pelletizer, transforming it into what they call “post-industrial waste pellets.” It’s essentially the same resin grade, but it has been extruded once before and then reclaimed by 3DQF.

Once they’ve accumulated a sufficient amount of these chopped-up materials, they go through a specialized machine to harden the pellets. This step is crucial to withstand the higher drying temperatures required to prepare it for extrusion. After the heating and cooling process, the material is transferred to their drying hoppers. These hoppers are supplied with extremely dry air at -69°C Dew point and heated to 90°C to eliminate any remaining moisture.

Once dried, the material is extracted from the drying hoppers and passes through a magnetic screen into their extruder. Their reworked filament skips the colouring stage as it already has its colour and proceeds directly into the extruder to be transformed back into filament.

This process significantly reduces waste, following a common practice in most industries. What sets 3DQF’s Re-Worked filament apart is that it’s 100% reclaimed material, thanks to special machinery that allows them to achieve this without needing to add extra virgin material.

The colour may undergo a slight shift, but it typically results in a dark metallic grey-brown shade.
